NO CLASSES: What Now?

Local government in the Philippines, particularly Obando, Bulacan; Tanay, Rizal, Antipolo City, Rizal, Angono, Rizal, Rodriguez, Rizal, Dasmarinas Cavite, and Carmona, Cavite, issued a notice of NO CLASSES today. It means students from pre-school to college in these areas will have a free rainy day under their disposal, but what will you do if there are no classes due to a stormy weather?

Announcement of NO CLASSES is not an extraordinary occasion in the Philippines. At an average, the island experiences 20 typhoons in a year. This means a possible of more than 20 days disruption of classes in an academic year. Today, students are fortunate to learn of these announcements before they hit school because during my school days, we would learn of it when we were already on the road, which is a very inconvenient way of securing the safety of the students. When these things happen, what do I do? Let us go back to my school days ( a memorable portion of my life… )

1. Read books.
I consider books as a friendly ally. I used to go to the library and borrow books of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys before some of my friends introduced me to Sweet Valley High. When I reached High School, I enjoyed John Grishmam’s novels and other legal novels, probably because I wanted to become a lawyer then. The images created by my mind and the courtroom drama amazed me.

2. Listen to music.
It’s raining hard outside, so there is nothing much to do. If you are lucky and electricity remains stable then I listen to the radio. I guess my favorite stations back then was NU 107 and Jam 88.3. These stations located in extreme opposites from my radio, a perfect way to describe my personality, which is inclined to the world of super rock but would also be appreciative of acoustic music. I guess some of you will feel the same way about this matter as well. ( But then, again there is a special reason why I was listening to these station then. I guess I know someone was listening to it as well, and sharing the same music with that person makes it more comforting )

3. Eat, Eat, Eat
I love to eat. I would check out the fridge and experiment with food. I would sometimes ask father to buy me some freshly baked bread then go to my cousins house, located just beside us, and we will make some home-made pizza. We would experiment on anything we have watched from the television, ( internet was not popular then ) and try to cook it. It was fun and our tummy would really appreciate our effort.

4. Clean my room.
It is one of the rare opportunity I could stare blankly at my room and say, I want to renovate. So it will get the broom, the vacuum, the rugs and start cleaning it to achieve a new look. It is especially tiring, but it is enough to make me feel productive for the day.

5. Write poems
Oh yes! I am a hopeless romantic and is still in the world of illusion during High School. I guess I wrote dozens of free style poems about love back then. It is not something I would brag today, but since I am reminiscing the past it is something I need to anecdote.

6. Phone conversations
I was very lucky because my brother, Valliant, is still young and I have the phone lines all by myself. There was no FACEBOOK or chats back then, but there is a phone to stay connected to friends.

Just loving Anime

7. Watch Television
It is time to indulge in watching the television, but I guess I was enjoying it even more because it was time to share stories with father and mother. I would often ask about their childhood days when fields were not yet converted to subdivisions and field frogs can still be captured and eaten. ( Yes, frogs are eaten in the Philippines. . . ).

I may have left some in my list, but this is the typical things I would have done if announcement of NO CLASSES were declared during my school days. How about you, what will be your plan for today?
