Blame It On the Weather
The weather has been in constant gloom for the entire week.
It is hard to understand the weather in the Philippines , when it rains it
pours, when its sunny it burns, when its cloudy it gloom.

For a moment, I had
a realization that the weather may have been connected with my mood or it may
simply be a coincidence. It helped me recall the X-MEN character STORM.
We used to perform role-play during my elementary years. We
had our own characters inside the room. I wasn’t Storm, but I preferred the
character of Jean Grey. Everyone agreed that I become her inside the classroom because
they say it fits my personality. I guess that is true. Here is an interesting
defense of her personality as mentioned in that
guy with the glasses.
I guess that will make my personality unpredictable. It is very
close to Storm, yet founded on logic. That is what I want to think and I hope
my friends would not disagree with me. In addition, since I need that weather
and emotions are really related, these are some proofs revealed by the experts:
The SAD Diagnosis
“According to Jacob
Teitelbaum, M.D., a sleep and fatigue expert and author of From Fatigued to
Fantastic!, levels of serotonin -- a feel-good chemical -- can dip in the
winter, when we're exposed to less light throughout the day. For about 20
percent of people, the symptoms (tiredness, depression, etc,) can be severe
enough to warrant an official diagnosis (Seasonal Affective Disorder, a.k.a
SAD).”
Hot or Cold: Are your Really Sick or Is it Only in Your Mind
"Temperature can
also affect mood and this is as a result of energy usage. In the winter our
immune systems are going to try harder in order to keep our bodies warm and our
heart rate will speed up. All this means that energy is directed toward those
tasks and so is not available in as large quantities for other activities.
At the same time this
is also why you are more likely to become ill – your immune system is already
under pressure from the cold and thus it becomes less able to stave off the
attacks from bacteria and viruses. This illness then can contribute to low
moods both as a result of the fact that it is frustrating and upsetting to be
ill, and also through the fact that being ill results in an even greater loss
of energy. Low mood is in fact recognized as one of the symptoms of flu or
cold. "
Rain, Rain, Go Away…
“Rain makes everything
more difficult and though it can't directly affect your hormones or energy
(unless you are standing in the rain in which case you will further tax your
energy as your body tries to heat and dry you up), it can affect your lifestyle
in ways that are not conducive to a good mood. For instance the rain is likely
to mean that you stay in more and socialize less. Socializing is actually one
of the most powerful antidepressants of all, as is sunlight as discussed
before. Thus if you are staying in you can often start to feel tired and low in
terms of your mood, and furthermore the lack of stimulation can arouse feelings
of 'cabin fever' and frustration.”
Will I Still Love the Rain? |
Considering all of these thoughts… should I blame the
weather for feeling sick today? Yeah… I guess it is all because of the weather…
